What Happened?
According to a recent survey, 78% of employees are already using AI tools at work, even when their companies haven’t set clear policies. What’s more, 58% admit to pasting sensitive data into large language models, including client records, financial data, and internal documents. And last but not least, 45% say they’ve used banned AI tools on the job.
Clearly, employees are taking advantage of all that AI has to offer when it comes to completing tasks more quickly, more efficiently, and occasionally more comprehensively. But their usage may be outpacing companies’ ability to properly monitor and police employees’ AI usage, which can expose sensitive company and client information, lead to security breaches, and more.
What does this mean for me?
The survey, conducted by Anagram Security, underlines the importance of a multi-pronged approach to safeguard your organization against threats posed by AI usage. Employee education and training, policies and procedures, approved and prohibited platforms, and company oversight are all critical components of a comprehensive approach to AI usage.
If you have not already updated your policies and procedures to address AI usage, consider starting there. Advisers should also establish an acceptable use policy and provide thorough, routine employee training so that they understand what is approved and what is not.
